While there are no official records, several reports lead us to believe that the date in which tea was introduced on the island in year 1750. The Initial trials of tea cropping occoured in the locations as Capelas, Pico da Pedra, Ribeira Grande e Porto Formoso on the island of São Miguel.

These experiments produced very small quantities, merely 10 kilograms of Black Tea and 8 kgs of Green Tea and while these quantities seem scarce today, they were sufficient incentive to proceed at the time.

So in 1878, the “Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura Micaelense” (a regional organization that helped promote agriculture), elected the Tea Culture as one of the local agricultural variants to support.

That same year, 2 Chinese arriving from the city of Macau were employed specifically with the purpose of developing the oriental techniques associated to this culture. From their recommendations the following aromatized plants, where imported to aid in the preparation and processing of the tea leafs:

Only the first genre were incorporated into the production process.
